First, mark the roof with chalk lines at intervals. You want to make sure that your plumb lines are straight. Lay your first shingle butted up against the outside of the roof and overlapping the starter strip. Nail it down, with one nail at each corner, just below the asphalt line. Lay the next shingle down, and nail it down. Continue to the end of the roof.
