Air Force Recruiters are Part Salesperson, Part Career Counselor?

Air Force Recruiters are part salesperson, part career counselor! They need to aggressively integrate into the local community seeking qualified potential recruits and at the same time Air Force recruiters need to be well-versed in the many job opportunities offered by the Air Force. The Air Force recruiter does indeed need to know how to “talk the talk”.Furthermore, the Air Force recruiter walks a fine line: their priority is to sign up recruits for “critical career fields” which in truth are jobs the Air Force has a huge need for. Yet the recruiter can’t discourage a potential recruit from pursuing any other job either.Face it: being an Air Force recruiter is not easy because military recruitment is not an easy endeavor. It’s true, Air Force recruiters are part salesperson, part career counselor but the biggest and most important role the recruiter plays is that of he or she is representing a specific branch of the Armed Forces and acting as human calling card at the same time.To an extent the Air Force recruiter may be more concerned with sales than with career counseling. An assignment as an Air force recruiter is not just handed out. Recruiting duty – no matter what branch of the Armed forces - is a “special duty assignment” that must be applied for. In turn, recruiter-wanna-be’s attend a “recruiting school” to get trained in the art of military recruitment, and then once out in the field the Air Force recruiter must hit daily, weekly and monthly quotas in order to keep a steady stream of quality Air Force recruits entering into military service. And because Air force recruiters are part salesman, part career counselor, he or she must also accept the challenge of door-to-door cold-calls. Gone are the days (if in fact they ever existed) when an Air Force recruiter could lounge idly behind a desk and rely on the worldly image of the Air Force to motivate potential recruits to come waltzing through the recruiting office door. Rather, the Air Force recruiter needs to aggressively integrate into the local community: at the local high school, at the gym or the supermarket. Where ever potential recruits may be, that is where the recruiter must be as well. The Air Force recruiter’s goal is to find qualified candidates who exceed the minimum standards established by the Air Force. Each branch of the Armed Forces is great in its own way, but the United States Air Force can truly boast about the education level of its recruits. More and more Air Force recruits than ever before already have some college or even a college degree in many instances. To that end, the military recruiter frequents college campuses as well.
