By the manufacturer's headstamp (usually "LC" or "ADCOM") and the presence of the NATO headstamp (vs. the older M193, which did not have this).Additionally, there will be a green coloured ring around the projectile (although this may sometimes wear off over time).

How do you identify a bullet  ?

A BULLET is the projectile fired out of a CARTRIDGE. A bullet would be identified by it's measurements, weight, and shape. A cartridge would be identified by measurements, shape, and the headstamp- markings on the head of the case. The bullet itself (especially in the military) is often called a "ball" even though it may be spearhead-shaped, and the combination of bullet, cartridge, primer and powder as a unit is commonly called a ROUND of ammunition.

Why a LOT number is important?

It tracks individual production runs, where the precise components can be quantified. In case of any problems with the ammunition, this allows it to be individually identified.

What is Longest confirmed M 16 kill?

As the M16 is not a sniping weapon, records of confirmed kills and distances generally are not kept. Special purpose variants of the M16 designed for designated marksmen and using the 77 grain Mk. 262 ammunition have been confirmed to have hit targets out to 700 metres (whereas 550 metres is the specified point target range for an M16 with standard 62 grain M855 ball ammo), but there is no record of whether or not kills have been confirmed at such ranges.
