If you are asking about which number he is (some people think he should in fact be the 42nd or 43rd president), Wikipedia explains that "There have been 43 people sworn into office, and 44 presidencies, as Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms and is counted chronologically as both the 22nd and 24th president." Thus, President Obama's presidency is the 44th.

But if you are asking how President Obama could have been elected, he became president in 2008 because he received the most votes, defeating his opponent, John McCain; and he was re-elected in 2012 after getting more votes than Mitt Romney.
