If a DJ simply wants to play a song from a CD, MP3 player or record, he or she can play music by simply pressing play. If, however, the DJ wants to make their own mix of the song, or combine preexisting/pre-recorded sounds and rhythms into a song of their own creation, they can load the sounds onto a controller (looks like a grid of lit-up rubber buttons) and play it almost like typing on a keyboard to produce their music.

If the DJ is playing at a club it will be the club that holds/pays the performance licence not the DJ.
