The reason camels are able to live without water for so long is because they are able to drink a large amount of water at one time and then store the water withing their blood. This causes their red blood cells to greatly increase in size, but the cell will not burst. In addition to this, the camels kidney functions so that urine is concentrated to reduce water loss. They are also able to store fat in their hump so they do not have to eat as frequently as other animals.

Camels actually do not store water in their humps, but store fatty tissue there so as to not have to store it in other places along their bodies. They have other adaptations such as longer legs to keep them higher over the sand and thicker coats to protect them from the sun. Their body temperatures can also range higher than normal animals to prevent them from sweating, and can store more water. They have other adaptations to conserve water, such as prevention of water vapor escaping through exhalation and, when these preventions fail, have defenses in conditions of dehydration, such as oval red blood cells for easier blood flow.
