Some dragons are portrayed as sentient creatures, and interact with humans. Some are more intelligent than would be expected of reptiles, which is often a consequence of supernatural or magical origins. In at least one SF book series, dragons and humans are symbiotic, but they may also be depicted as smart animals like horses.

Metaphysically, some dragons may be able to sense a good or benevolent nature among humans.
