The usual custom in a family is that the wife and children all take the same last name as the husband, even though the wife normally had a different last name before she got married, which is known as her maiden name. Sometimes it is felt that the wife's family and background are important enough that they should not disappear from the family name, so the children are given the last names of both the wife and the husband, to form a hyphenated name, such as the character Wesley Wyndham-Pryce.
