I'm not sure what this stuff would be called chemically but they sell stuff here called 'Brasso' for cleaning up brass or copper things. You could use that to make an old penny look new. You just rub some of the stuff on it and it looks clean as new.
I've also head of people putting them in Coca-Cola but i don't know if that works.
