Taking too much of most drugs over a period of time can lead to addiction. Many drugs change receptors and reactions in the brain when taken, which causes the "high." When these changes are done for a long time, the brain cannot function as it normally did because the drug altered it-some reactions are stopped normally and cannot happen without the drug doing it for the brain. Not doing a drug for a few hours or days after doing it for an extended period of time leads to withdraw- pain, shaking, anxiety, depression, seizures, cravings, death (in the worst cases) and much more. Many do not want to deal with these symptoms and keep using drugs.

Addiction is very much emotional too. Many people who regularly do drugs do it for the feeling it gives them. Many people feel happier, more controlled, in less pain, or in a heightened sense of concentration with a lot of energy. When on it for a while, some people feel they cannot do normal activities without the drug, or they will not have fun or be happy without it.
