# How can a stem and leaf plot be used to determine the mode of a data set?

The mode of a data set is simply the most frequently occurring
value. The mode can be determined from a stem and leaf plot using
what one eminent statistician refers to as the "inter-ocular
traumatic test" (i.e. by looking at it!)

For example, take the following data set:

10, 11, 20, 21, 24, 27, 27, 27, 28, 28, 29, 29, 29, 31, 33, 33, 33,
33, 33, 39, 53

1|01

2|01477788999

3|1333339

4|

5|3

Even though the peak corresponds with the 20s cohort, it's clear
that the most frequently occurring value, and hence the mode, is
33.

### What is the purpose of a stem and leaf plot?

to simply organise your numbers.ajm If you can make a histogram,
a dotplot, or even a boxplot; there is no reason to do a steam and
leaf plot. It's the worst graph.
With a stem and leaf graph, you can see the distribution of data
points, and determine whether it's normal distribution or not. As
mentioned above, there are better graphs for doing that,
though.

### What is the definition of stem leaf and plot?

A stem and leaf plot is one type of histogram. A simple bar
chart histogram show the frequency of data in certain ranges. The
leaf and stem plot has the advantage of identifying both the
frequency of the data in intervals and the data values that are in
the intervals. Two disadvantages to the plot is that the interval
is determined by the uppermost digit (10's, 100's or 1000's) and
the plot may not be easily understood by others. See related
link.

### What can you leaf plot?

A leaf plot displays data by grouping it in the left column by
numbers to a certain decimal place, and then listing the remaining
places in the appropriate right column.
Examples of data that is well organized on a leaf plot:
Test scores for a large class
Age of people attending a function
The price of milk at 10 local supermarkets

### Which type of data cannot be used in a stem and leaf plot?

Data that is too narrow or too wide (small or large) as it
cannot fit into a steam and leaf plot considering the purpose
of a steam and leaf plot (how it breaks down the numbers that have
2 or more digits). A steam and leaf plot has 2 separate columns
that separate the value of numbers into those 2 sections (although
if there is less than 2digts or if there are too many, the process
will fail).
