If your sentence has a "possibility of parole" date on it, it is highly unlikely that you will be paroled until you have served at least that amount of time. However, there have been circumstances that have led to early parole, one of which I know is overcrowding in prisons. And if there is a circumstance in which early parole is offered, inmates are usually selected according to their behavior or the nature of their crime.

You can be paroled after you've served 1/3 of your sentence, depending on your behavior.

For a prisoner to be granted early release from a prison, the prisoner must display an incredible change in character and shown improvement in several areas first. However, it will be up to a judge or a parole board to decide if the prisoner's crime is not severe enough to keep them in prison to complete their sentence.

What are the benefits of a parole board?

If some convict has been rehabilitated, and is ready to leave prison and to become a productive member of society, then both the convict and society will benefit from his or her early release; it is very expensive to keep people in prison, and prisoners are generally not accomplishing much if anything with their lives while in prison. So, a well run parole board can make an accurate assessment about who should and should not be granted an early release.

Can you get released from prison for a funeral?

This will depend on the criminal law in your country, however, you are not entitled to get permission. To be out of prison for any funeral, it is also up to the prison authorities to decide this. Compassionate leave if granted is normally only granted (if granted) for a parent or a sibling.
