It is somewhat preventable by the mother not ingesting any medications, substances that can cause cleft lips. However there are times a cleft lip just occurs with no known cause. The medterm is ideopathic.

I am a 52 year old male who was born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate. I have no children myself, but my sister's daughter (my niece)....was born with a cleft palate and other debilitating mental and physical problems.

I also know of some couples where either the father or mother was born with a cleft and have clefted children....and one couple who were both born clefted who have two beautiful perfect non-clefted children. Although I do believe it can be hereditary....I think a lot of these different anomalies/deformities are just "the luck of the draw"!

It can also not be hereditary, u can get it from the mom taking drugs and other substances. Also it can just happen like said before "the luck of the draw"
