Iron is an element.
Carbon is an element.
Steel is a compound.
Iron is strong, but it is heavy. Carbon is fairly weak in comparison to iron, but is light weight.
Steel is a compound of Iron and carbon.
Steel is stronger than iron, but also lighter.
By having the understanding of how to make steel, we can make taller buildings because they aren't as heavy as iron buildings. The taller the structure, the heavier it gets. At some point, the structure gets too heavy for the base of the structure and the whole thing collapses.
Chemical compounds are formed from chemical elements.

Elements and compounds
Compounds are made of elements. Elements are the smallest units of the compounds. Elements are bond to make compounds.
Compounds do not form elements. Elements form compounds.
Elements and compounds are both composed of atoms. Compounds are composed of two or more atoms of different elements.
Elements become compounds after chemical reactions.
Elements are listed in the Periodic Table of Elements. Compounds are not listed there because they are not elements they are compounds. An element is a substance made up of one type of atom, compounds are formed from combinations of different elements.
For example the elements from the first two groups are easily combined with halogens; or noble gases are very unreactive, etc.
Elements are single, however compounds are made up of two or more elements.
they are elements compounds are when you take two or more elements and mix them together.
You can find elements and compounds in matter.
