It is important because elephants have terrible hearing and the same as smell. The only thing they can rely on is their eyes and conscious. Most of the time they will mistake younger children for wild animals as predators. Maybe a child would be pointing at the elephant and the elephant might try to protect his own young ones. It is normal for an animal to get nervous when people are paying much attention to him / her.
