They can be used to treat cancer.

Gamma ray "guns" (radioactive sources) are arranged in a ring, so that they all converge on the same point. The sources are aligned above the patient, so that this point of convergence is in the exact same location in the body as the cancerous tumour. The sources are activated, and the aim is to cause the uncontrolled dividing cells to be killed by the radiation. Because it is so finely set up, the gamma rays are designed not to kill off normal tissue.
