Regular exercise gives meaning to our lives, allows us to be physically active, decreases stress, and minimizes the impact of stress-related hormones on our bodies and minds. Through exercise we can sort of "burn off" the chemicals our bodies release.
I think exercising is a great stress reliever. I can tell on days I do not exercise I am more irritable. I think mental health and physical health go hand in hand. If you are not happy with yourself and physical appearance, it will take a toll on your mental health as well.
An essay or even a book could be written about the benefits of physical fitness to emotional health. A few reasons:
1. Fitness of the body holistically provides a confidence in general health and little to worry the body's owner regards ailments, disease, etc.
2. Being fit and healthy allows an individual to carry out physical and mental tasks that may be difficult for others, especially people who are seriously unfit or unhealthy.
3. When we take part in physical activity and exercise, the body secretes seratonin and dopamine. These are the brains reward sensor/receptor chemicals, otherwise known as the brains feel-good hormones. Many fitness enthusiasts report a feeling of wellbeing - mild euphoria - relaxation during and immediately following sport/exercise sessions.
4. Physical fitness increases not just strength, but it also has an asthaetic and usually cosmetic dimension. Being able to get into those skinny jeans you were to fat to wear six months ago, for example. When we are of a healthy weight and of good proportion, we all feel good. And look great.
5. Being fit often requires an exercise or target to be reached. Football requires wins and goals; weight training requires beating your personal best at the bench press; marathon runners taking 5 minutes of their last event. Doing this brings a sense of achievement and satisfaction. Not to mention everyone in your circle being mightily proud of your epic achievements.
6. There's also a social aspect too. Fitness activities often mean mixing with others and travelling. Getting out and about, meeting friends, joining groups and clubs etc. Social interaction is an essential element of attaining emotional stability.
There's probably many others to add to the above. Hope it helps out.
