It can not. Hydrocephalus is not contagious. It develops with genetic diseases and disorders in an unborn child or newborn, and it can develop in adults who have certain disorders that prevent the proper flow of cerebrospinal fluid from where it is stored in the ventricle cavities inside the skull to outside the skull where it can be eliminated.

Cerebrospinal fluid surrounds the brain and spinal cord and is circulated around the brain to cushion and protect the spinal cord and brain, to remove certain waste products, and to supply nutrients. This fluid moves from one ventricle (storage cavities) to other ventricles. Normally excess fluids will drain from the brain and get absorbed by other tissues. When there is blockage that stops the circulation or emptying process, the fluid can gradually build up and put pressure on the brain and become symptomatic with dementia, disruption in nerve signals and other problems caused by improper function of the Central Nervous System.
