I can't understand your question.
master if the ide cable has a single drive connection. if the ide cable has the master and slave connection. then set the drive to master with slave.
(On Windows), the active partition is a primary partition on a disk which Windows will load its files from. An active partition is always a startup partition. If there are several OS's on the one disk, Windows will load from the one marked as active. - pentavore
A Hard Disk Drive (HDD for short) stores your files. In most computers running Windows, your primary hard drive is represented by your C: drive.
DiskPart command - line utility
On a GPT (GUID Partition Table) disk in Windows Server 2008, the maximum number of primary partitions supported is 128. Unlike MBR (Master Boot Record) disks, which are limited to four primary partitions, GPT allows for a larger number of partitions without needing to create extended partitions. Each partition can be up to 9.4 zettabytes in size, depending on the file system used.

Yes, but only if your motherboard supports the ability to boot to alternate IDE devices\drives. If your WinXP system does support this then you will need to temporarily install the hard disk from the old Win98 system as the primary master and install your Win98 OS on it. The installation of Win98 on the hard disk drive will not work in your system running XP. Win98 Plug and Play is more Plug and Pray, so don't bother trying. Backup you data first because install the win98 OS probably will remove all your data. Remember to remove the XP hard disk so you don't install win98 over it. Once you are done with the install of Win98 you will need to re-install the Winxp drive as the primary master and configure the win98 hard disk as secondary master. Your BIOS setup should allow you to select what drive to boot with. Good Luck!!!
In Windows Server 2008, a physical drive using MBR partition style can have up to four primary partitions and one extended partition.
If you Master Boot Record is damaged, then your computer will/can not load up an operating system (such as Windows). You can mend this from the original Installation disk for your operating system.
