How can it be possible that people can say there is no afterlife?

In the US, at least, freedom of speech guarantees that in most cases people can say pretty much anything, even if they know for certain that it is not true.
There are a substantial number of people who legitimately believe that there is no afterlife. I'm sorry if it offends you that they believe this, but the world does not revolve around what offends you and what does not.
