From the American Heritage Dictionary, the third definition of reflection is

a. Mental concentration; careful consideration; and

b. A thought or an opinion resulting from such consideration.

My guess is that all forms of learning, including reading, attending seminars, taking courses in college, and consulting with others, can increase professional knowledge and skills, but through reflection, one can retain more (through understanding) and devise a better scheme of doing things (through induction and deduction).

If one rote-studies a book for the sole means to have a good grade, one can promptly forget the material after the exam. However, through reflection, the knowledge from reading is linked to past and present experience and remains to be re-used in the future. The link helps retaining the knowledge. The same applies to skills. Reflection spurns more ways to apply the skills that may not be apparent at first.

================================= I use my Desktop Search for reflection all the time. Randomly showing me video clips or music or pictures. You'll be surprised at what you have forgotten. Keep lots of notes and screen captures for technical stuff. Don't be stressed about having to know all the details any longer. It's all there to reflect upon.
