If you're seeking information about annotations normally used to reference, define or cite the resource one uses in order to write research papers or academic assignments, I would define annotations this way:

An annotation is a summary or synopsis made of information in a document, research paper, online record, software code or any other information, in the margins or highlighted passages. Whilst creating these comments, generally a small number of sentences join together to establish a summary to express the relevance and importance of each source prior to writing.

One way to annotate chapters in a book is by using sticky notes or tabs to mark important sections or jot down notes directly in the margins. You can also highlight key passages or write summaries at the beginning or end of each chapter. Another method is to keep a separate notebook where you write down your thoughts, questions, and reactions to each chapter as you read.

Read the chapter you are planning on annotating thoroughly. Once you have read through your chapter go through it highlighting any key words or important descriptions of what is going on. Create some symbols for example you could use a star for a particular word or use a speech bubble for a phrase or sentence. You can then place brackets at on the page margins at important sections.

After spending much of our lives being told not to write in books, in college, we are encouraged to write in our books. Keep in mind, however, that if you are counting on re-selling your textbooks at the end of the year, you will want to minimize the amount of writing, glossing, and underlining in your books, in order to receive as much money as possible for them. If you're planning to re-sell your books, consider using pencil to annotate and underline, or post-its that you and easily remove before selling the books. Post-its are also a useful way of annotating a book from the library.

Making notes in the margins of your books can help you enormously when you review material for exams, and annotating your books can help make you an active, engaged reader more likely to remember what you read. When you annotate or mark your textbooks to emphasize the important information, you want to only emphasize the key points or concepts. Don't simply highlight or underline everything. You want to prioritize the material that you will later re-read as part of your exam preparation.

Highlighting, or underlining, is a useful technique, but remember that on a given page, you should only underline the most important concepts, or terms. If you are highlighting or underlining more than 15% of a given page, you're not prioritizing the information. Only highlight those concepts or points that are most important. For some classes, it's most effective to have the textbook open during lecture so that you can easily mark those sections—perhaps with a checkmark or star in the margin—that the instructor emphasizes. Also be on the watch for date, or formulas or definitions of important terms.

It's helpful to create your own personal method of annotating. You might circle important concepts, and underline terms and definitions. It's helpful to summarize key points with a brief note in the margin. Use the margin to ask questions that are answered in that section of the text. You can see an example of one way of annotating a text here.
