If one wishes to appear online in MSN one has the option to choose who has the ability to see that one is online. There are drop down menus that allow one to appear online or appear offline to different individuals on one's contact list.
You need to right click where it says you are offline it will give you a list of options. Such as appear offline and appear online.
On msn, you can choose to either appear online, appear offline, busy or away.

If you are using MSN and you want to prevent one of your contacts from speaking to you, then you will need to block them. Simply logon to MSN messenger and find the person you wish to block in your contact list. Right click on their email address or name and a menu will appear. One of the options is 'block contact'. Select this and then click on 'OK'.
You cannot appear offline to one person unless you block them.You can only appear offline to every contact on your Windows Live Messenger, by simply clicking on your name than click on Appear Offline
