Take great care when land-clearing, and be very careful to keep the koala corridors open. The treed corridors are vital to all native animals.

In koala-populated areas, keep dogs inside or restrained at night. Don't cut down their habitat for example don't cut down there trees or take down the leaves off their trees. Be involved in the koala Foundation.

Although, as of 2013, koalas are not officially endangered, they are still vulnerable, and there are very real fears that they may become extinct in the future. To prevent this from happening, individuals need to raise awareness of the koalas' specialised habitat needs, and increase awareness of how much bushland is cut down for housing and roads.

Housing developments lead to an increase in the number of domestic dogs roaming through bushland, and dogs are one of the koalas' biggest killers. In addition, too many people allow their pets to wander unsupervised. If you are someone who lives in a known koala area, then ensure your dog is always well supervised.

Developments and land clearing also lead to more roads. Koalas have a range of home trees, and their territory is often split by roads through new urban developments. As a result, when koalas try to wander from one of their home range trees to another, they are hit by cars. If drivers slowed down through area where koalas are known to wander, there would be fewer deaths again.

humans can designate vast regions of land as a national park or something similar where the Koala's are free to live in a natural habitat, where they can be protected. All hunting and poaching should be prevented, and outlawed with very heavy fines and prison sentences. This is basically how all animals can be protected. Zoos can also help wih maintaining large populations, and developing breeding programs to prevent inbreeding in the species. Reintroducing animals in the wild, when possible, is also a possibility to increase natural population sizes.

However you need to realize that extinction is a natural process. It is an amazing driving force for evolution, because as one species goes extinct, another wil rise to the task and fill in the nitch, and will evolve to maximize its new potential in that role. However the only difference now is that the extinction rate at the current time is far too high as a result of human interference. Basically extinctions always have happened, even long before humans even existed, however now they are happeniong far too freqquently.

Are koalas considered to be endangered animals?

No. As of 2012, koalas are not endangered. Current population estimates by the Australian Koala Foundation put the figure at around 80,000, but the trend seems to be dropping. Although the koala is not endangered, on 30 April 2012, the federal government moved to include koalas on the list of threatened species. The 'threatened' designation only applied to the most at-risk populations in Queensland, NSW and the ACT.

Are koalas endangered and overpopulated?

Koalas are not endangered, and they have only recently been added to the "threatened species" list in parts of Australia. While they have all but disappeared from some regions in Australia, in other areas there is definitely an overpopulation problem. Kangaroo Island is one of these areas.
