A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a document that provides variables and conditions of a welding procedure that is produced for a very specific application.

To write one properly, experimentation and calculations must be done to find the correct parameters for the procedure.

To generalize, a WPS must include all known parameters of the process; including process type, current, current type, voltage, shielding gas type, shielding gas flow rate, base metal, electrode type and size, filler metal type and size, joint design, and travel speed. There may be more variables than listed, depending on the application.

One must also remember that on a WPS, ranges for variables are used that are adjustable by the welder or welding operator. Ex. Current (Amperage) 150-170 A instead of just saying 155 A. To find these ranges is where calculations are necessary.

Welding procedure specification (WPS) is a document which gives guidance on welding for welders or welding operator.. As per ASME BPVC Section IX , one of the governing document for WPS, A WPS is a written qualified welding procedure prepared to provide direction for making production welds to code requirements. You can go through my blog, hareeshkv+blogger, for understanding more about WPS and how it is prepared.

How much money does a Welding Engineering Technician make?

I am a journeyman welder and a welding engineer in Alberta Canada. I was working in northern alberta charging $150 per hour and there was plenty of work. But in Calgary welders make $35-$45 per hour and engineers can make up to $70 per hour but it all depends who you work for.

What is spot welding?

Spot Welding is a process where two pieces of overlapping metal are welded by applying an electric current through two contact points. The interface of the parts creates current resistance which produces heat. The two metals form a "button" type weld when pressure is applied. The welds will be of the approximate size of the contact points and the filler metal consists of the base materials only (additional material is not generally added). The equipment used for spot welding in smaller operations would consist of a set of "tongs" that apply current and pressure to the parts being welded. This process can be accomplished using a portable unit or an automated process such as with automobile manufacturing.Workpieces are held together under weight applied by anodes. Normally the sheets are in the 0.5 to 3 mm (0.020 to 0.118 in) thickness extend. The procedure utilizes two molded copper combination anodes to gather welding current into a little "spot" and to at the same time cinch the sheets together. Driving a vast current through the spot will dissolve the metal and shape the weld. The appealing element of spot welding is that a considerable measure of vitality can be conveyed to the spot in a brief span (roughly 10-100 milliseconds).[2] That allows the welding to happen without over the top warming of the rest of the sheet. The measure of warmth (vitality) conveyed to the spot is controlled by the resistance between the terminals and the size and length of the current.[3] The measure of vitality is coordinated the sheet's material properties, its thickness, and kind of cathodes. Applying too little vitality won't dissolve the metal or will make a poor weld. Applying a lot of vitality will soften an excessive amount of metal, launch liquid material, and make a gap as opposed to a weld.[4] Another element of spot welding is that the vitality conveyed to the spot can be controlled to deliver solid welds.Projection welding is an alteration of spot welding. In this procedure, the weld is limited by a method for raised segments, or projections, on either of the workpieces to be joined. Warmth is amassed at the projections, which allows the welding of heavier segments or the nearer dividing of welds. The projections can likewise serve as a method for situating the workpieces. Projection welding is regularly used to weld studs, nuts, and other screw machine parts to the metal plate. It is additionally oftentimes used to join crossed wires and bars. This is another high-generation prepare, and numerous projection welds can be masterminded by reasonable outlining and jigging

How do you prevent the occurrence of slag inclusion and undercut?

The following techniques can be used to prevent slag inclusions: Use welding techniques to produce smooth weld beads and adequate inter-run fusion to avoid forming pockets to trap the slag. Use the correct current and travel speed to avoid undercutting the sidewall which will make the slag difficult to remove.

Studying At A MIG Welding School Can Advance Your Career?

If you are interested in finding a good school that can teach you how to weld, you should be able to find a program that provides MIG welding training. This will help trainees acquire sufficient knowledge to perform a type of welding that is a lot faster to complete than the traditional "stick welding" process. MIG welding is also referred to as Gas Metal Arc Welding. The process was pioneered in the 1940s to allow non-ferrous and soft metals to be welded easily. MIG welding can either be a semi-automatic or an automatic procedure. It involves using a wire that is connected to a direct current. The wire is used to join two pieces of metal together. This method also makes use of argon to shield workers from contaminants that are present in the air in the workplace. Aside from its ability to join non-ferrous materials and sot metals, there are a lot of advantages that come from using MIG welding. This procedure is a continuous welding process that is much faster to complete than a regular welding method. MIG welding equipment also uses a shielding gas that protects the arc of the weld to make a clean seam with minimal visible splatter. Learning the techniques involved in MIG welding will allow you to use different procedures that will join metals and alloys together. However, there are also some disadvantages to using MIG welding techniques. These include the complexity of the machine, as it requires a constant flow of gas and a direct current to complete a welding procedure. It also needs wires that can be move to a certain distance. The MIG technique is entirely different from traditional stick welding. Therefore, welders will need to acquire skills that will assist them in using the tools and methods correctly. Since the equipment requires argon gas, MIG is not possible in open places where the wind blows heavily. However, MIG welding procedures are common in manufacturing companies. If you have completed a program at a MIG welding school, you will be prepared to work in manufacturing and heavy industry.
