They do need space because if they don't the plant doesn't have any room to expand it's roots. So it wouldn't be able to get water and die.

Well, it depends on what type of plant you are planting. If you are planting a tree it will need more than a tiny space, but, if you are planting flowers, they don't need a ton of room. If your still not satisfied look up the plant and see how much room is needed, when it should be planted, and other things that is necessary to keep your plant growing green!

Yes. Plants crowd out each other to monopolize the available sunlight (or other lighting).

This is in addition to phototropism, where the branches and leaves will orient facing the light source.
