The Beatitudes were pronounced by Jesus as encouragement to His crowd of followers who were, at that time under the tyranny of the Roman occupation. He taught that to be humble, in mourning, to be meek, to hunger and thrust for righteousness sake, to be merciful, pure in heart, to be peacemakers, that in times of persecution like the prophets who went before them, in all these circumstances, that they would be comforted and rewarded.

The essence of the Beatitudes is to encourage one to live by ones faith, no matter what the circumstances. They are a message of hope particularly to the oppressed and those who do not enjoy success by worldly standards.
