MS Excel is a spreadsheet program used on computers running Windows. A spreadsheet can be used by a business to store data. The data could be stockkeeping, customer data, financial data, etc. Data can be added to and retrieved from the spreadsheet (automatically updating) in the form of graphs and printed reports. A graph may show a shortfall or gain that could affect the cashflow the business depends on for existance.
A spreadsheet can be used to store customer details (address, purchase history, etc) and can be used in a "mail merge" to create flyers when advertising their business, or when sending out invoices, etc.
