Because whalers favored the whale so much that they called it the "Right" whale to kill, hence its name. They have never fully recovered despite bans on hunting them. The right whale is endangered because it was the most hunted. It was called the right whale by whalers because it floats when dead, is slow-moving, and has good oil and blubber.

What is the difference between the blue whale and the sperm whale?

The blue whale is the fastest, the sperm whale is not far behind and the right whale is the slowest. The blue whale would be the only one with a well defined fin (a dorsal fin) on it's back. A sperm whale (like all toothed whales and dolphins) has a single blowhole at an angle on the top/front part of its head, so it has a single blow that comes up at an angle. A right whale (like all baleen whales) has a double blowhole on the top of its head. It has a double blow. A blue whale, even though it also has a double blowhole has a high and straight blow. There are several good field guide books that show the difference between the blows of different types of whales.

Why is the right called right?

The right whale got it`s name because they were slow, big and easy to find, so they were the "Right" whale to hunt. Right Whales are called that because they were the "right whale" to hunt. They lived where the early industrial whalers hunted and they float when dead and when people would go whaling the right whale was very slow and they would swim close to the surface :)

Is there a right whale?

The Southern Right Whales are marvelous creatures. Right whales were named by whalers who thought they were the "right" kind of whales to hunt. Since they were loaded in blubber, they were easy to catch and they floated after being killed. The whale's skin is a brown to dark gray with white patches near its mouth. Like the other baleen whales right whales have no dorsal fins. The heads of these whales are hairier than others. There can be found up to 300 hairs near the tip of the lower jaw and close to 100 on the top. They also have callosities behind the blowhole, on the chin, above the eyes, on the lower lip, and on the rostrum. Callosities themselves are grey; the reason it appears to be white due to large colonies of whale lice around them.
