Equality ensures subjects to be even in all areas. This means everyone is equally sovereign and powerful, among others. Since everyone have the same capabilities and strenght, everyone is better of in security because the odds of victory and defeat are evenly distributed, so in a cost-benefit analysis of a conflict no one is assured gain from trying to acquire more power or ressources. Therefor equality gives protection theoretically.

Although one would think (pure) equality is good, history shows that this is not the case, and not even possible. Forcing equality in a society does not result in equality either, because the authority (government) which arranges the equality needs special (violent) privileges, and therefor the equality becomes unequal, and as history shows, society is enslaved due to excessive government. Equality in political science is also called utilitarianism. Another aspect of equal means of security is the concept of 'Mutually Ensured Destruction' (MAD), a very used description of the Cold War powerstruggle.
