Hiding doesn't work so well--viz the people at Pompeii. (See related link from the Discovery Channel.) If an area has a volcano erupting, leave the area if possible.
It depends on how much notice they are given. If they are given notice, people should evacuate with supplies long enough to last a couple of weeks. Such as a radio, canned food, first aid kit, medication, lots of bottled water, matches, clothes, hypothermia blanket. The list could go on but basically just essential survival items that can be found on the countries civil defence website.
Be somewhere else, the further away the better.
