Scholars have shown that the Bible is frequently not true on matters of history. So you can not be sure that any statement about historical events is true, unless confirmed independently.
The Bible is clearly not true scientifically. The sun and stars were not really created after the earth already existed, nor were they placed in a 'firmament' just above the earth. Grass could not have lived, even for a second, before the sun existed. But the ancients simply did not know this.
Whether or not the Bible is true on matters of religion depends on faith. However, it must be recognised that many books of the Bible are now known to have been altered or added to, sometimes quite significantly, long after they were first written. Which version is theologically true - the original, or the version that is now used in most modern Bibles? Ans since the Bible is often interpreted in ways that may not have been apparent to the ancients, we need to know which interpretation is theologically correct.

If the Bible is true then those who follow it can depend on paradise in the next life. If the Bible is not true, then their efforts, their faith and their commitment have all been in vain. Moreover the missionaries and preachers who spread out and seek to convert others are doing no one a favour. If the Bible is not true, then it is possible that the Hindu scriptures or some other holy books are true, or it is possible that atheism is the correct worldview. These are some of the reasons it does matter whether the Bible is true.
