I would have to seriously disagree with Cindy's answer. I don't think athiests cannot feel anything for anyone other than themselves. That is a sweeping statement without any found proof. I would be embarrased if I wrote that answer personally, and that is coming from a follower of Christ, so you cannot say that I am disagreeing with you on the basis of being a satinist or athiest.

Anyhow- My answer for the question would be putting away thoughts of any sort for that thing, since emotions follow thoughts. It would be losing any interest in that thing or person. Imagine yourself putting that thing inside a box, and then throw away that box in an ocean. Becoming emotionally detached is dangerous, since it leads to inactivism, when it could be potentially useful, but that's all I can think of at the present moment.
