This rise in hemoglobin is possible in many different scenarios. If the patient was receiving a transfusion of packed red blood cells, we would expect to see a 1.0 mg/dL rise in hemoglobin post-transfusion. Another way this might be possible is due to the variation in instrumentation, repeat analysis of the same sample do not always result in the same value.
