Someone can build their own server by first securing the necessary hardware such as the CPU, motherboard, harddrives, disc drives. Next they will need to install the server software. Lastly the server will need to be configured.
As opposed to a creative server, where people have permissions to give themselves blocks and items to build whatever they want, a survival server is where people must mine their own minerals, build their own houses, etc. It is basically Single Player but with more people.
