According to http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaC200Port and http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200Port every Sansa in the e 200 and s 200 line works except those that are Rhapsody or have firmware version 2. So as long as it's not Rhapsody I think your fine, because I think you may be able to download downgrade firmware. You might have to call Sansa's customer service line though. Just say you liked the old firmware on your friends better or something. It looks like Nextag has some good deals. Here's the website, you may want to try it: http://www.nextag.com/Sandisk-Sansa-e280-8GB-536768677/prices-html
Good luck and congrats on realizing how much better alternative firmware is.
A Sandisk Sansa e200 series, including e280, e270, e260 and e250 will only accept a micro sd card. If the device is a v1, it can only accept a card that is NOT HD. The v2 version will take HD. You can install a third party firmware on the v1 and that will alow you to use micro SDHC cards to 32gb. For more information, go to www.rockbox.org
