GM tried that once back in the 1980s. They took one of their gasoline engines and attempted to convert it to run as a diesel engine. To say that the results were less than satisfactory would be an understatement. It was a disaster. Diesel engines have to be built to handle stronger compressions than gasoline engines. GM's engines quite literally beat themselves to pieces.

If GM can't do it, it is doubtful that you and I can not either. But maybe I am being too pessimistic. GM is rather noted for its failures which seem to vastly outnumber its successes. The Corvair. The Vega. Those are two of their most outstanding failures but neither stands with their attempt at building a diesel on the cheap.

Can petrol work in a diesel engine?

Yes, petrol will work in a diesel engine but will run rough for a short time before the engine needs extensive and expensive repairs.

How long will diesel car run on petrol?

It won't, even a mixture of gasoline and diesel will not work. May I add that running petrol in a diesel will destroy that diesel engine.

Why does diesel not work in petrol engine?

What are the defferences between dessel and petrol engine?

Petrol & Gas engines are spark ignited engines where as diesel engines are compression ignited engines. Petrol engines works with explosion of fuel air mixture due to spark from spark plug inside the cylinder. Diesel engines works with combustion of fuel air mixture due to compression, compressed mixture attains a very high temperature which exceeds the flash point of diesel and starts burning inside the cylinder and the hot gases after burning of fuel misture exerts force on piston which makes the diesel engines work. Diesel engines are highly efficient than petrol engines.

Will gasoline work in a diesel engine?

No, Gasoline or Petrol as it is also known will not fuel a diesel engine, in fact it may suffer permenant damage if you try.

How maruti suzuki K series engine work?

BY petrol / diesel / lpg. they call it fuel :)

Can a diesel gearbox be used with a petrol engine?

It will physically fit as many diesel engines share the same blocks, but the gear ratios will be unsuitable, due to the reduced effective rev range of a diesel compared to the petrol engine. In short, will probably fit, won't work

What damage can petrol do to a diesel engine?

It can make the engine seize up, the mechanic parts and components are made to work with the right type of fuel for the engine. Basically, if you put petrol into a diesel engine, it would run for about 10 minutes then die. Then you would need a new engine. Diesel fuel is oily and provides lubrication for the pumps and injectors. Petrol does not provide the lubrication, so the pumps and injectors will be damaged. It is unlikely that the engine will run at all if all petrol is used. Diesels are compression ignition engines. The fuel ignites as soon as it is injected into hot air. petrol needs a spark.

Which engine is better diesel or petrol?

Diesel - because the combustion is better, you get more energy per pint of fuel. But if you want more "Bang for the bucks", a petrol engine will give you a more rapid acceleration. The diesel engine has another property: it will operate well with a wider span of rpm: e.g. it can give you 75% efficiency at 2000rpm, and keep on going to almost 5000rpm. If you drive a car with a manual gear, you do not need to change gear so often. In a boat, you have to change propeller, which is cumbersome, but here the diesel has even a bigger benefit, since it will work good at slow speed - say 5 knots, and equally at 25 knots. Usage of turbocharged and advanced injection makes the modern diesel engines almost as fast as petrol, and what remains then is the sound. To get the same sound as a angry petrol engine. So, if you want to impress the girls, I would say that the petrol engine is better.

Why do you need to bleed a diesel?

Diesel engines work in a different way to petrol in that they work on pressure to ignite warm diesel as opposed to petrol engines which have spark plugs. in order to work, there can be no air, air wont ignite!!

Can a petrol engine run on diesel?

Diesel cars cannot run on petrol. If you went to a petrol gas station, your car cannot run. You will probably screw up the engine. SO NEVER EVER USE PETROL GAS FOR DIESEL ENGINED CARS!The reason being the diesel engine works at very high compression ratios and the petrol is having a lower value of FLASH point so it will burn off even before the end of the compression stroke.Yes, for just a little while until it self destructs and is ruined.
