The insurer will want you to adequately identify yourself, so be prepared with full name, SSN, address, etc. If you or the person that you think bought the insurance had a relationship with an insurance agent, by all means contact that agent to start the search.
If you believe that another person initiated the transaction (in other words, insured your life), naturally, you can ask. Note, though, that the person or entity taking out the policy would have to have an insurable interest in your life. Stated otherwise, they would have to have a stake in your continued life-which can be a financial stake or one based upon "love and affection". If there is not such an insurable interest and you do not wish the policy to remain in force, the insurer can be contacted and the situation explained.
