Avoiding touching the shiny surface of the disk, hold the CD by the edges and use a piece of soft cloth to wipe dust particles off the surface. If there are fingerprint marks over the surface, dip a soft cloth in Isopropyl Alcohol/Ethanol/Methanol and wipe the surface gently - DO NOT use a petroleum-based solvent like Acetone because you may permanently damage the surface of the disk.

You do not need clean out your Ps2 to play Ps1 games. The main reason as to why it may not be working is that the lens may be dirty. If cleaning it does not work it may just be that the Ps2 is having issues reading discs, which indicates the system is failing.

The method I use on my PC is a vacuum with a hose to first blow out particles and then try to remove more with a small nozzle at the end of the hose. But then the PC has a side that is easy to remove

Take the disc to be professionally cleaned and polished and always put the game discs back into the game container when taking them out of the console.
