Thermal energy is the sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the particles in a material. Heat is a form of energy transferred by differences in temperature. These are both forms of energy.

Heat is a quantity of energy, in this case thermal energy, for example the heat required to raise a liter of water to it's boiling point 100 degC, and it is measured in Joules like all energy quantities. Temperature is a measure of how hot something is relative to something else This means you have to compare heat and temperature. As well as giving the difference between the heat and the temparature.

A hot body has more thermal energy than a similar cold body, but a large tub of cold water may have more thermal energy than a cup of boiling water. Thermal energy can be transferred from one body, usually hotter, to a second body, usually colder, in three ways: conduction , convection, and radiation.
