William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper publisher who owned a paper mill that made newsprint from wood pulp, and DuPont, who had just introduced nylon, needed industrial hemp to be illegal as it would cut into their markets. In the 1930s, business was much different than it is now. Take Mr. Hearst. He decided that hemp-based newsprint would be a threat to his wood-based newsprint business. In the 21st century business climate, Hearst's paper mill would do tests, find they could make newsprint out of hemp cheaper than they could out of wood, and start making hemp newsprint. Similarly, DuPont would use hemp to make rayon and make lots of money.
It does not cover newsprint mills
Newsprint mainly consists of wood pulp and is of low cost and high strength. There are limits on the percentage of newsprint that can be manufactured from recycled fiber. Fibers extracted from softwoods include spruce, fir and pine and these timbers in the form of newsprint, can be recycled five times
