Put your hair into plaits. The number and how tight they are can determine how curly it goes. Once your hair is plaited spray it with water or hairspray for extra hold. Sleep with the plaits in over night. Wake up, take out the bobbles (don't brush it too much) and voila. Wavy/curly hair... :)

In 1960, women used hair rollers in their wet hair to curl their hair. Roller size varied and large rollers were about the size of a Coke can. They used bobby pins or clips to hold the curlers in place and often slept in the curlers. Pin curls or spit curls were other ways to curl hair.
Get a perm or wear curlers to bed every night.
After a shower, use curlers to tie your hair and leave them in until your hair dries.
They're probably of poor quality. Try using some pin curl or alligator clips to really hold them in place.
