Mrs Lyons is an upper class liverpuddlian woman who is desperate for a child. Her husband however refuses to adopt although she believes that even if they do adopt the child could become their own.
After years of trying she discovers that her cleaner Mrs Johnston (a lower class citizen) is expecting twins. Confused, desperate and in need of help Mrs Lyons says 'give one to me'. Mrs Johnston reluctantly agrees.
As the play develops, Mrs Lyons becomes slightly paranoid and is positive she's being followed by Mrs Johnston. She worries, panics and is consumed with guilt. It results in her looking like she is having a nervous breakdown.
She did except in the end, Mrs Lyons thrust it in her hands.
