Venus is a rocky, volcanic planet, although it is believed that the volcanism subsided several hundred million years ago. Its atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide with some nitrogen. There are vast clouds of sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid surrounding the atmosphere. This has led to a runaway greenhouse effect, raising the temperature to 860 F, making Venus the hottest planet in the Solar System, hotter even than Mercury. The upper clouds are swirling very rapidly, and there appears to be a double vortex at the south pole. There is no life, as we understand it, although some scientists have theorized the existence of microbial life in the upper, cooler layers of the atmosphere.
