Without meaning to sound facetious the easiest way to obtain copyright protection in the US is to do nothing.
It isn't necessary to formally register to obtain a copyright. Copyright protection is automatic, as soon as work of sufficient originality is "fixed in a tangible medium, perceptible to human eye, machine reader or other device".
Once your music has been "fixed," (recorded or notated), it is automatically protected. You can also register your work with the Copyright Office; it has the same level of protection, but it enables you to sue infringers more easily.
