Inertia is the inherent property of a body that makes it oppose any force that would cause a change in its motion.

A body at rest and a body in motion both oppose forces that might cause acceleration. The inertia of a body can be measured by its mass, which governs its resistance to the action of a force, or by its moment of inertia about a specified axis, which measures its resistance to the action of a torque about the same axis.

Inertia is the quality of all matter to resist any change in velocity. Velocity is both the direction and the speed of a moving object. Thus, if an object isn't moving at all, it has no speed, and it will resist a change in its speed that will cause it to move. If an object is moving, it will resist being slowed down, or sped up. Also, objects always resist changing direction, too.

This is why an unbalanced force must always be applied to an object to cause any change in its motion. This is Newton's First Law of Motion.

law of inertia says that an object tends to remain at rest or uniform motion in straight line unless compelled to change that state byan external applied force......
