There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

You need to find out what the check engine light came on for. Have the computer scanned for codes. When certain errors occur that could damage the engine, sometimes the computer will just shut down the engine to prevent damage. That may be what happened to you.

Just because you had it serviced and had brake work will not necessarilly stop the engine check light from coming on.
