Go to system settings when the computer starts to boot up, and then it will show you what drive is your hard drive. The hard drive is what the computer normally boots in unless changed and the letter is normally C:/

Assuming this is Apple hardware... insert the installation disc and select drive you want to install on. Once installed hold down the alt key while starting up and select the drive you want to boot from.

You may have lost the boot record on the hard drive or the hard drive may have failed. Try booting from a floppy or CD, whatever rescue boot device you have. If you can look at the C: drive from the alternate boot device you may have just lost the boot record. If you can't get to the C: drive you may have either a drive or a controller failure.

Why will a Newly formatted drive not boot from CD it says cannot find NTLDR?
Apparently the BIOS is still trying to find the loader on the newly formatted C: drive. Change the BIOS to boot from the CD FIRST That was done, but it made no difference. I tried three differen hard drives, three different CD-ROM drives, and three different Windows Discs, and all gave the same answer. It would not even boot from ERD Commander. It did boot with Spinrite and found no problems with the hard drive. The only OS disc that it would boot with was a Win 98SE disc, but it hung up at the point where you select large disc support or not. I got sick of messing with it about midnight last night, and I cloned the hard drive of another very similar laptop, and it is now running very smoothly. I thank you for the suggestion
