if you can get to the wires without droping the tank. you may have a bad ground start at the gauge in the dash and see if it pluged in. look for a fuse in the fuse box.
In addition to the above, there is a reostat on the fuel pump/sender that is controlled by a float. IT is a small plastic piece with fine wire windings on it that I have seen wear out. You'll have to drop the tank for this one. Pukenstein@aol.com
If the above solutions didn't work. Check for a bad fuel float. Less than $5. Drop tank remove fuel sending unit. Float is more than likely full of gas causing empty reading.( mine was)Disconnect battery before starting. About 2hrs and some help from a freind. jes
Float could be stuck in the tank or the ground wire on the tank is broke.
It would be better to write: My gas gauge reads empty. Note that 'gauge' is singular, so it needs the singular verb, reads. If you had several cars all with gas gauges that read empty, then the verb would be read.
you should go to a car shop for that one!:)
i have a 1990 ford ranger and my fule gauge always reads full, why?
The way to test the gauge is to unhook the wires to the sender and the gauge should read empty. Now, ground the sensor wire and the gauge should go all the way past the full level. If this happens your wiring and gauge are fine.
In the gas tank
Your pressure gauge may be broken....If it fluctuates, then you know its not your gauge, but if your gauge always reads 80, it may need to be replaced.
The fuel sending unit has probly gone bad in the tank. You have to drop the tank to replace it. If you do this job, make sure to replace your fuel pump too..
In most cases the sending unit in the tank is at fault.
20 gallons- with 2 in reserve (when tank gauge reads empty). Plenty....! This is within a couple of tenths of a gallon; I don't have it in front of me at the moment. It is 17.6 gallons "on the gauge" and 19.4 counting 1.8 gallons "reserve" that doesn't show on the gauge (after the gauge hits empty).
There could be a few problems....wiring issue, the gauge in the dash has gone bad, or the sensor for the fuel float is bad, id check wiring and the gauge first because sending units are expensive and can be a pain to change
i would recommend getting gas when that happens. perhaps take it to the mechanic to fix the gauge
