There could be a few problems....wiring issue, the gauge in the dash has gone bad, or the sensor for the fuel float is bad, id check wiring and the gauge first because sending units are expensive and can be a pain to change
you should go to a car shop for that one!:)
If your 1998 Toyota Tacoma's fuel gauge intermittently shows empty and then reads correctly, it could indicate a faulty fuel sender unit, a wiring issue, or a problem with the gauge itself. The fuel sender, located in the fuel tank, may be sticking or malfunctioning, causing inaccurate readings. Additionally, check for any loose connections or damaged wiring that could affect the signal to the gauge. If the problem persists, consider having a professional diagnose and repair the issue.
You might plan to refuel when your fuel gauge reads one-eighth of a tank of gasoline. Some people choose to refuel when the gauge reads one-quarter of a tank remaining.
Simple check is to ground the fuel sending wire at the fuel tank.If the gauge reads FULL then it is a bad fuel sending unit and you need to drop the fuel tank to replace it.If the gauge reads empty when you ground the wiring then it means you have a bad fuel gauge.I would lean strongly towards the sending unit be bad my 87 the gauge started reading about 1/4 tank less before it failed.
If the vehicle will stall and will not restart or appears to be out of fuel but the fuel gauge reads above empty, replace the fuel sensor assembly and auxiliary tank fuel level sensor if equipped. if not, replace the instrument cluster.
I have a problem with my 2 door Toyota rav4 2002 fuel gauge. it reads empty when in fact it is partly full. When filled up at pumps it then reads only half full. What can I do to fix this.
You probably have a faulty fuel gauge sending unit.
i would recommend getting gas when that happens. perhaps take it to the mechanic to fix the gauge
bad fuel pump it could also mean that the fule ammount sencor is out.good luck.
Defective fuel sending unit.
Either your engine coolant temperature is HIGH , your oil pressure is LOW , or your fuel gauge reads at or near empty
20 gallons- with 2 in reserve (when tank gauge reads empty). Plenty....! This is within a couple of tenths of a gallon; I don't have it in front of me at the moment. It is 17.6 gallons "on the gauge" and 19.4 counting 1.8 gallons "reserve" that doesn't show on the gauge (after the gauge hits empty).
